Les Contemplations is Victor Hugo’s masterpiece of lyric poetry, at once the memories of a man and the meditations of the poet-mage. Over the course of 11,000 verses, he deploys all his prosodic virtuosity and breathes new life into the classical lyric genres by getting "a revolutionary wind to blow" over these lines.
