Córdoba romana

La fundación de Córdoba en el solar que todavía hoy ocupa, donde el paisaje dibujaba con claridad la transición entre dos universos geográficos, culturales y también humanos: Meseta y Andalucía, Sierra Morena y campiña, barbarie frente a refinamiento, minas, ganadería, pastos y caza frente a la mejor zona hispana de explotación agrícola, tuvo como principal justificación su control sobre el río, verdadero ‘don’ del sur peninsular como lo fue el Nilo para Egipto y factor determinante de civilización, un punto geoestratégico, en el punto mismo en el que se inicia el valle del Guadalquivir, reforzado por importantes vías de comunicación, con acceso garantizado a una am-plia batería de recursos y nudo comercial de primer orden favorecido por su puerto fluvial, con salida directa al Atlántico. Fueron todas ellas premisas de gran trascendencia para Roma, que tuvo siempre muy en cuenta este tipo de aspectos al elegir la ubicación de sus más relevantes centros urbanos y de distribución. Se entienden así su carácter rector del territorio y su papel capitalino, en una casuística muy similar a la de tantas otras ciudades destinadas a desempeñar un rol militar, político y comercial de primer orden que, en el caso de Córdoba, acabaría por fraguar en una urbe colosal y modélica, capaz de invertir todos sus recursos en crear una nueva imagen de sí misma, destinada a reforzar su fidelidad a la causa del Emperador. Esta obra analiza a fondo la ciudad desde sus orígenes turdetanos hasta su consolidación como gran urbe clásica, bucea en sus espacios públicos y privados y persigue la huella e identidad de Roma en Córdoba a través de sus mejores producciones artísticas. Devuelve así a la luz lo que llevaba tanto tiempo oculto.

The foundation of Cordoba on the site it still occupies today, where the landscape clearly outlined the transition between two geographical, cultural and also human universes: Plateau and Andalusia, Sierra Morena and countryside, barbarism versus refinement, mines, livestock, pastures and hunting versus the best Hispanic area of agricultural exploitation, had as main justification its control over the river, true 'gift' of the peninsular south as was the Nile for Egypt and determining factor of civilization, A geostrategic point, at the very point where the valley of the Guadalquivir begins, reinforced by important communication routes, with guaranteed access to a wide range of resources and a first class commercial hub favored by its river port, with direct access to the Atlantic. These were all premises of great importance for Rome, which always took these aspects into account when choosing the location of its most important urban and distribution centers. In this way, it is possible to understand its territorial leadership and its capital role, in a casuistry very similar to that of so many other cities destined to play a military, political and commercial role of the first order that, in the case of Cordoba, would end up forging a colossal and exemplary city, capable of investing all its resources in creating a new image of itself, destined to reinforce its loyalty to the Emperor's cause. This work analyzes the city in depth from its Turdetan origins to its consolidation as a great classical city, dives into its public and private spaces and pursues the imprint and identity of Rome in Cordoba through its best artistic productions. It thus brings to light what had been hidden for so long.
