Los ríos siempre han estado ahí. Nos han servido de caminos y de fronteras; han saciado nuestra sed y se han teñido con nuestra sangre; han movido nuestras máquinas y destruido nuestras cosechas y nuestros hogares; nos han traído la abundancia y la escasez; los hemos venerado como dioses y maltratado como esclavos. Pero debemos también reconocer su papel en nuestra historia. The rivers have always been there. They have served as roads and borders for us, they have quenched our thirst and have been dyed with our blood, they have moved our machines and destroyed our crops and our homes, they have brought us abundance and scarcity; we have worshiped them as gods and mistreated them as slaves. But we must also recognize their role in our history. This book tries to do that: to explore a new path, approaching the past from a perspective that has never been adopted, placing rivers at the center of historical processes and reflecting on the role they have played in them.
